Bev Brown’s shop is a cozy haven on a busy road. People linger to chat, wander around the book shelves, then walk out with an armload of Bev’s carefully-selected, gently-used paperback books. She carries about 20,000 books plus a collection of recently-released books on CD which she rents for 2 weeks. To save space she’ll collect one volume of each book by popular writers – entire shelves and racks are devoted to the most popular ones like Agatha Christie, Catherine Coulter and Jude Deveraux. The rest of the books are shelved by category (mystery, sci-fi, war, classic, western, romance, sports, American history, gardening, large print and on and on).

August 2009 marks 26 years in the used book business; in 1983 Bev spent 3 months putting ads in the Buyers Digest and going to garage sales to accumulate 6,000 books to start the store.

A card file keeps track of credit earned by customers who bring in used paperback books or CD’s (bring in 20-25 so she can pick the 10 she wants). Bev gives 25% of the cover price in credit and sells at 60% of the cover price.
